Rose - Cornelius

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Feb 26, 1897

Cornelius Rose was born in New Jersey, August 27, 1812, and died February 19, 1897, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Myra Zuck, with whom he had lived for a number of years.  His parents moved to Union county, Indiana when he was but a small boy, and while that part of the State was yet a wilderness.  After he arrived at manhood he owned and conducted a grist and saw mill in that county for several years and then moved to Boone county.  His wife, a Miss Starbuckle, died twenty-three years ago.  He had been a member of the Methodist church for some fifty years of more, but of late years died not go out in company much on account of his deafness.  He was the oldest of seven children, four brothers and three sisters.  They have all preceded him to the better land except Mrs. M.J. Hunt, his youngest sister, who is now 70 years old.  He leaves several children, among them, Mrs. Sarah Stine and Mrs. Myra Zuck, of this vicinity, and Mrs. Mary Anders of Crawfordsville, and Land Rose, of Boone county.  Grandpa, as he was familiarly called, ever had a pleasant salutation when he met you.  It is said that "an honest man is the noblest work of God."  Surely Grandpa Rose was one of this noble work.  His life of morality and virtue was certainly one that all would do well to pattern after.  He was buried at Liberty church Sunday, February 21, but on account of a disappointment of those intending to sing the funeral ceremonies were omitted.  – thanks to Kim H
